How Much does Web Design Cost?

How Much does Web Design Cost?

web design catLet’s take a moment to see how web design companies charge for web design. A common question that comes up is “how much does web design cost?” Unfortunately there isn’t a single number that fits all companies. This article is going to cover some typical website costs and go into a few of the various other costs associated with web design. You’ll also get some info on what to expect when dealing with a web design company and how to pick your next designer. With that being said, let’s dive right in!

How do web design companies charge?

A pretty common practice in most professional services, (however not the way we charge) is to find out how much it costs to deliver the service and then markup that price to something your potential customers can afford. You see this a lot with contractors and doctors. With that in mind, you’ll see many web design companies that will come up with a price of around $100 – $200/hour. They’ll take a look at what it is you need and give an estimate on how long it will take and how much it’ll cost. Some very common prices that you’ll see charged by larger companies will range anywhere from $7,000 – $20,000. If you need to sell products online (e-commerce website) the range could be anywhere from $8,000 – $40,000.

Although the price tag is much higher, there are benefits that come with that. For one thing, some people prefer to work with a reputable company that has a large proven track record. Also, when you’re paying top-dollar it will sometimes mean that you’re getting top-level service. However one thing you need to watch out for is a sort of “cookie-cutter” customer service that can occur in large web design and online marketing companies. They might tell you “You’ll have your own account manager” which turns out to just be a sales representative who tries to comfort you whenever you’re upset by missed deadlines or when you’re unhappy with the work. Unfortunately this is the number one complaint that we hear from people who have worked with large digital marketing and web design agencies.

Another common practice in web design is to charge by package price. This is a very simple and uncomplicated way to get a website made and it is often how our company charges. The way this works is that it is predetermined how much work will go into making a certain type of website. From there it is very easy for a business owner to ask for the price of a website and get an immediate response. Have you ever talked to a salesman who didn’t tell you the price until after an hour or two of conversation? How about waiting a day or more? We’re not fond of this method of selling, so we offer package pricing to keep things simple. In some cases the cost of a website may be customized based on the needs of the business.

Something you won’t see as often (however it does happen occasionally) is that a web design agency will charge you based on the size and value of your company. In other words, if you look like a multi-million dollar brand you might start seeing website pricing at $50,000 and up for something that should really cost much less. In fact, the US Government paid at least $88 million for the Obamacare website (some figures are speculated to be in the hundreds of millions). You can read about it here. The site probably could have been built for less than 6 figures.

Web Design by Zing (aka, Nashville Web Design) maintains competitive pricing because of the fact that we don’t have a huge delivery team. The fact that it’s only a few of us running a local web design company, we save lots of money on things like insurance, bookkeeping etc. The fact that we’re “up and comers” also helps in our pricing. We have to make a name for ourselves, so the early years of our company are the most important for us to make our mark. That means you get to talk to the guys who are making your website, you can ask us any questions directly (you don’t have to go through a customer service rep), and you can rest assured that we’ll meet with you if you need to go over your ideas (that is of course assuming that you’re in Nashville, Franklin or Murfreesboro).

One important note on web design costs is that there are some companies that will outsource their web design work to foreign countries. You see this often in companies that offer web design services for less than $1,000. Issues can arise quite commonly as a result of this and the business owner winds up spending much more down the line in regular maintenance and updates. However, it should be noted that this isn’t always the case! Sometimes you might get lucky, and you’ll wind up spending $700 for a website that works just fine without much maintenance or updating.

Various Types of Websites and Costs

When deciding on our package pricing or even custom pricing, one of the things that needs to be looked at is how complex your website is going to be. Imagine for a second that you’re a chiropractor and you want all booking to be done online through a custom-built booking calendar. This isn’t the most complex request, however there are complexities involved. It would have to be coded to where anybody can click a date and time on a calendar, then it would have to block off certain times depending on the service being requested. A quick routine adjustment will take less time than someone requesting a full consultation on several body pains and nutrition testing. Something like this would have to be custom made for a person and it could take a good deal of time depending on how thorough you need this booking calendar to be.

Some common requests are as follow (including a ballpark estimate on pricing):

A Simple, Informational, Business Website:

These types of websites are among often very simple. They make up the majority of our portfolio. These are commonly requested by business owners in the service and medical industries (doctors, lawyers, contractors, accountants etc.). Here’s what we usually do for businesses that need this service:

  • Client provides logo (however if logo design is needed, we can provide that).
  • Website consists of approximately 4-6 pages
  • Other features we can include:
    1. Social Media links and feeds
    2. Blog
    3. Content writing
    4. Email newsletter signup
    5. Images
    6. SEO research and website optimization

Web Design Cost: $1,500 – $5,000

NOTE: The companies that pay on the lower end usually have their own written content and images, they have their own logo and they’ve made their social media profiles.

Mid-size Business Informational Site:

This is similar to the last option; however it’s just got a lot more of everything. This is a common request among doctors or surgeons who offer many different services and procedures that they want to showcase on their website.

  • The client provides their logo (again, we can make a logo as an additional option)
  • Your website will have approximately 10-20 pages
  • Other features we can include:
    1. Social Media links and feeds
    2. Blog
    3. Content writing
    4. Email newsletter signup
    5. Images
    6. SEO research and website optimization

Web Design Cost: $5,000 – $15,000

A Small E-Commerce Website:

Now we’re looking at a website that has products and the ability to sell things online. Although this isn’t necessarily complicated, it does typically take more time and work. Here’s what we usually do for our clients who need a small e-commerce website, and the website cost:

  • The client provides their logo
  • The website will have about 4-6 pages
  • The website has a shopping cart with 1-50 products
  • Some other features we can put into the site:
    1. Social Media links and feeds
    2. Blog
    3. Content writing
    4. Email newsletter signup
    5. Images
    6. SEO research and website optimization

Website Design Cost: $5,000 – $12,000

Mid-sized E-Commerce Website:

As you may have figured, this is a lot like the small e-commerce website except for the fact that it’s a bit more of everything. Here’s what we usually include

  • The client provides their logo
  • The website will have about 10-20 pages
  • The website has a shopping cart with 50 – 500 products
  • Some of the other things we could do include:
    1. Social Media links and feeds
    2. Blog
    3. Content writing
    4. Email newsletter signup
    5. Images
    6. SEO research and website optimization

Website Cost: $10,000 – $30,000

How can I Save Money on a Website?

Here’s a common question that comes up. You’d like to have a great website, but it’s important that you’re within budget. We understand completely! That’s why we’ve come up with packages that should help you get the website you’re looking for with some of the bells and whistles, at a reasonable price.

A common mistake that business owners make is that they go all-out in creating a website with a bunch of bells and whistles that they really don’t need. Fancy animations can be very fun, but they really just slow down the website which can create a really bad user experience for some (although for business owners it can often times be appealing to have these intricate animations pop up). Another great example is the business owner who wants us to write all the content for them. In many cases business owners don’t have the time to write their own content, or they’re not professional writers. However if you own a company and have a lot of free time and not a lot of money, you could save some money in this area by writing your own content.

Providing your own images will also save you money. Stock photos can cost as much as $20 for a single image! If you have a website that needs 20 or so images, that can really add up. So try and save some money by providing your own photos.

Custom coding can also get pricey. If you can avoid it, we suggest that you do so. However in some cases you will need custom code done to a website, and we’re prepared to deliver. An example of this is a client who wanted their website to create a new page with every customer, and this page would track that customers package. This was additional custom coding that came at an additional cost.

So What’s my Website Cost?

If you’ve read this whole article and you’re still interested in getting a website designed with us, give us a call and we’ll go over some of our packages with you! You can also fill out our online form and we’ll get back to you with some package pricing.

You’ve got a general idea of how much it should cost (some ballpark figures). The next step to take is to reach out to us and let us find out more about what it is you need and want. For some, there might be an interest in having a focus on optimization. Others may want the best user experience. Some might want something in between. Whatever the case may be, let us know what you need and want so that we can be sure to produce it for you.

Our company primarily makes WordPress websites. This is a great platform because it allows people to add their own content after we’ve left the scene. It is also very easy to optimize and it’s commonly used by digital marketing agencies as the main platform for search engine optimization. Although you can have a website made in just about any platform, WordPress is our first choice.

Web Design Cautions:

One of your safest bets is going to be going with a local company. You can meet your web designer in person, get to know them and their company, etc. However if you’re just not sure, here are a few things you should look out for when choosing a web design agency.

  • They don’t speak or write in proper English – This can be quite a barrier in communicating what it is that you need and want for your web design. This can also act as a problem in terms of getting in touch with your web designer. An example of this would be if you hired someone in India or Pakistan to develop your website. Unfortunately they’re in a different time zone that would make it difficult to ever be in touch with them.
  • Be careful about companies that say you have to host your website with them. Some companies will offer web design and internet marketing at unbelievable rates; however they’ll require that you commit to their hosting. You might find that the hosting they provide doesn’t perform well, or even that you’re being overcharged for hosting (which we’ve actually seen companies do). Try sticking with the big name hosting providers like GoDaddy.
  • Watch out for companies that have you pay monthly for your website and/or SEO! You might find a great deal that offers to give you a website and internet marketing for only $60/month. Sounds amazing? Well often times the companies that do this actually own the website. So as soon as you miss a payment or decide you no longer want to continue service, they’ll just rent out the same website to someone else. This is especially bad if you have fliers or ads that have that web address on it.

At Web Design by Zing we work to provide you with the best service at a reasonable rate. We want you to know what we’re doing and we want to work with you to make sure you get exactly what you’re looking for.

As it was mentioned earlier, we’re making a name for ourselves and that means hard work and quality service. If you ever need anything, please feel free to reach out! We’d love to help answer your questions and even give you free advice. We’re award-winning marketers, experience designers and expert coders. We aim for nothing less than the best!
